International Day of Forests: Why We Must Protect Our Green Lungs

News - 21 March 2025

On March 21st, we celebrate the International Day of Forests, a moment to reflect on the importance of these ecosystems and our role in protecting them. Forests cover about one-third of the Earth's surface, host 80% of terrestrial biodiversity, and provide us with oxygen, raw materials, and countless benefits. Yet, every year, millions of hectares disappear due to deforestation, pollution, and wildfires.

International Day of Forests: Why We Must Protect Our Green Lungs

Why Are Forests So Important?

  • They absorb CO₂ and fight climate change

  • They produce oxygen and improve air quality

  • They are home to 80% of terrestrial species, ensuring biodiversity

  • They regulate the water cycle, preventing floods and droughts

  • They provide livelihoods for millions of people

However, according to the FAO, we lose approximately 10 million hectares of forest every year, mainly due to agricultural expansion and overexploitation of natural resources.

How Can We Protect Forests?

  • Reduce paper and wood consumption by choosing FSC-certified products

  • Avoid single-use plastic, which often ends up polluting forests and waterways

  • Join reforestation projects and forest clean-up initiatives

  • Raise awareness and share information, because change starts with knowledge

A Huge Thank You to Those Who Care for Our Forests!

Today, we want to express our deep gratitude to all the volunteers of Un Sacco Pulito who have cleaned up forests and trails from litter over the years. Every bag of waste collected is a tangible step toward protecting these invaluable ecosystems. You are proof that together, we can make a difference!
